Many Buffalo, NY residents have issues with their garage door not opening or closing fully. This is quite common and there can be many reasons that your garage door may not open or close all the way. The expert garage door repair team at 716 Garage Door Repair can help you reset your garage door opener limit switch so that it works as it should.

One of the most common reasons Buffalo residents have when their garage door isn’t opening and closing properly is that their garage door opener limit switch needs to be adjusted.

How does a garage door opener limit switch work?

With the limit switch, your garage door wouldn’t know when to stop working. the limit switch can also be the reason your door starts closing, then reverses. When this safety mechanism becomes out of whack, your door can become dangerous.

Identifying if the Up or Down Limit Switch needs to be adjusted

There is more than one switch on your door. The up switch determines how far the door opens. The down switch determines how far the door goes down. If your door won’t open all the way, it’s the up switch. The down switch needs to be adjusted if you see a gap when you close your door.

Adjusting the Limit Switch on Your Opener

The following steps should be followed if you have determined that the limit switch is causing your door to behave erratically.

  1. The first step is to measure where the door stops

Using a measuring tape, measure from the ground to the bottom of your garage door if the up switch needs to be adjusted. You will need to shut the door. Measure the gap at the bottom of the door with your tape measure. Make a note of the measurement.

  1. Locate your opener’s limit switch

You will need a ladder tall enough for you to reach the limit switch on the opener motor housing. If you aren’t sure where it is on your model, consult your owner’s manual.

  • 3. Adjust the limit screw

To adjust the limit screw, turn it clockwise

To adjust the closing of the door, turn the down limit screw counterclockwise. To adjust the opening, turn the up limit screw clockwise. For every three inches off, turn the screw one turn.

Test where your door stops every turn. If it is going too far down, you may have to turn it back a bit.

Can I paint my garage door a different color?

Many residential garage doors can be painted. Always check your garage door owner’s manual for specific painting instructions.

Is it possible to replace a section of the garage door instead of the entire door?

Yes, it is possible to replace just one section of your garage door. However, it’s important to assess how much damage is involved and the age of your door. A newer, minimally damaged door will likely have matching panels that can be swapped in, while and older model may no longer be in production or it may not be possible to match a door that has faded in color.

Why Do I need to understand R-value?

The R-value measures how well it insulates. A garage door with a high R-value will retain more heat than a garage door with a low R-value. Typically, a higher R-value garage door will be more expensive, but you will save money overtime on heating costs due to it’s insulating properties.
