716 Garage Door Repair > Garage Door Repair > How to Replace a Broken Garage Door Window

Do you have a broken garage door window? The good news is that you don’t have to replace your whole door, or even the whole set of windows. It is possible to replace just the broken glass. If you need to replace your garage door windows, the team at 716 Garage Door Repair of Buffalo, NY can assist you. We have also prepared a quick guide to help you replace your garage door windows if you’re a DIYer. Here are some instructions:

Garage Door Window Replacement: The Tools You Need

Besides safety gear such as gloves and goggles, you will need the following tools to replace your window:

  • Putty knife
  • Glazing compound
  • Brushes
  • Glazier’s points
  • Paint that matches the frame/door
  • Ladder

You can remove the old glass once you have all of the tools and your replacement window. If you don’t have some of these tools, don’t fret – give the team at 716 Garage Door Repair a call – we’d be happy to help you.

Step 1: Carefully Remove the Broken Glass

You should wear gloves and goggles while removing the broken glass in order to avoid getting shards of glass in your eyes or embedding themselves in your skin. You will need to loosen the glass and carefully lift it out one at a time.

Step 2: Measure & Purchase the Replacement Glass

Measure the height and width of the opening and then subtract ⅛ of an inch so the new pane will fit in the frame of your garage door window. Be sure to measure the thickness as well – this is very important!

Then head to your local hardware store. You may want to buy one or two extra pieces incase you break the glass installing it, or to have on hand incase another garage door window breaks. You can choose glass or acrylic.

Step 3: Insert & Secure the New Glass or Acrylic into the Garage Door Window

Check that the new glass fits inside the frame (you may have to carefully remove some of the frame), then run a ¼ inch bead of glazing compound around the outside and push the glass firmly into the frame.

Add glazing points. The putty knife can be used to help you move the glazing points into place. We recommend placing a glazing point every 4 to 6 inches around the glass.

Put more compound around the edges and smooth it out with the putty knife once all the glazing points are in place.

Step 4: Finishing & Cleaning Up

If you had to remove any pieces of the wooden frame, put them back in place and carefully secure them with small wooden nails. Use the paint to touch up any areas that have been marred during the work. Be sure to allow the glazing compound to dry thoroughly before using the garage door. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended dry time.
