If you find that your garage door remote doesn’t appear to be opening or closing your garage door, there are a few things you can try to fix it. The team at 716 Garage Door Repair of Buffalo, NY has put together a short guide to help you troubleshoot your remote, if your garage door won’t open or close.

The remote’s batteries need to be replaced

You could have a dead remote battery if you can operate your door using the wall button. Many remotes take 9-volt batteries. Replace the old battery with a new one and test the remote.

Make sure the opener is plugged in

It is possible that your opener could become unplugged if something hits it or if it becomes loose from the vibrations of the tracks. It is plugged into an outlet on the ceiling above the tracks. You should be able to see it and visually check if it is unplugged. If it is, you’ll need a ladder to plug it back in. Be careful – ladders can be dangerous.

Remove the batteries from the opener and unplug it

You may need to reset your opener after you have changed the batteries on your remote. This is pretty straightforward forward and most homeowners in Buffalo, NY can do this themselves. Take the batteries out of the opener & unplug it. Wait at least 30 seconds. Then replace the batteries and plug it in. Try the remote now.

The remote needs to be reprogrammed

If you have replaced the batteries and unplugged the opener, but it still won’t work, you may need to re-program the remote. You will need to release the light cover to expose your remote, which is usually located on the back or side of your opener. You will need to find the “learn” button. Your remote may have a red/orange, yellow, green, or purple button. The color will determine what you need to do to re-program your remote. Make sure you follow the specific instructions in your owner’s manual.

Check to see if the circuit breaker has been tripped

If neither the wall button or the remote work – this is likely the cause. Check your breaker box to see if any of the switches have moved over to the right. If so, move them back to the left position, then try your remote. When you trip a breaker, you may need to unplug the opener and take out the batteries to reset it. If that doesn’t work, you may need to re-program the remote.
